Hello,

my name is Jiří Beran, I have been involved in fencing since I was a child. Together with my father, who, alongside another fencer, Honza Tůma, was at the birth of 5M, we strive to push the boundaries in fencing and customer services. I try to pass on all my experience to our customers and young fencers across the country. I’ve loved fencing my entire life, which is reflected in my talks and exhibitions for children and schools. My dad and I started a foundation to support young fencers and also to promote sport fencing as much as possible. Take a look at who takes care of you at 5M :-)

A summary of my fencing career

I have been involved in sport fencing since 1991, when the SC Praha sport fencing club was first established, and has remained my fencing home to this day. I became the national champion several times in both the Junior and Senior fencing categories.

In 1998, I participated for the first time in the Cadet and Junior World Championships in Valencia, Venezuela. Since then, I have represented the Czech Republic in successive Junior and later Senior national teams.

In the Junior category, I value my silver medal from the 2001 European Junior Championships and my results in late 2000 and early 2001, when I won two World Cups and led the Junior world rankings.

In the Senior category, I represented the Czech Republic for the first time at the 2001 European Championships in Madeira. My greatest achievements to date include 1st place at the 2007 World Cup in Buenos Aires and 3rd place finishes at the 2008 World Cup in Lisbon, the 2006 World Cup in Sydney, and the 2006 World Cup in Bogotá. In the 2006, 2007, and 2008 seasons, I ranked in the top 20 of the World Cup standings.

From more recent history, I appreciate my 3rd place at the 2014 World Cup in Heidenheim, Germany, and, most notably, my victory at the European Qualification for the 2016 Olympics, which earned me direct qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Unfortunately, I was eliminated in the first round of the Olympic Games, when, in overtime, I had an invalid hit the referee initially attributed to me, cancelled. As a result, I received international fair-play awards from both the International Fencing Federation and the Czech Olympic Committee.

In 2017, we achieved historic success with the épée team by winning the World Cup in Vancouver, Canada, for the first time in Czech fencing history, and then bringing home a very valuable bronze medal from the European Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.

In 2019, I won an individual bronze medal at the European Championships in Düsseldorf, which i value a lot for the competiton feeling.

In 2020, I did not qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo, but I decided to continue for another Olympic cycle, mainly because of the team competition. In 2023, I became the first Czech to win the Grand Prix in Cali, Colombia, the equivalent of a tennis Grand Slam. The competition was also the first qualifying event on the path to qualifying for the Olympics in Paris. Throughout the season, we delivered excellent performances in the team competition within the TOP 8, and at the last qualifying tournament in Tbilisi, we secured 2nd place, surpassing the Swiss team, and historically qualified for the Olympics as a team in the épée discipline for the first time in 32 years. Before the successful team qualification, I qualified by name for the individual competition.

At the last team competition before the Olympics at the European Championships, we finished in 4th place. The Olympic Games followed, where I placed 29th in the individual competition. In the team event, we shocked the world with our performance and brought home a bronze medal in the team competition together with Jakub Jurka, Michal Čupr, and Martin Rubeš.

The team competition at the Paris Olympics was my last professional match, and with the bronze medal, I concluded my professional sports career after 32 years in fencing. I now focus on promoting sport among the youth, organizing talks, fencing days, and organizing fencing team-building events.

A little about me outside of sport fencing:

I studied civil engineering and construction at the University of CTU in Prague. It is a field that I still enjoy, in particular architecture, which gives me another horizon beyond fencing. I also play the drums, which for me is both a physical, coordinating and relaxing addition to sports fencing. If, during my favourite time of year, winter, the circumstances allow, I like to go to the mountains to snowboard or ski. In summer, I enjoy mountain hiking too.

So now you know me a little more about me :-)
