Jiří Beran - who takes care of you in 5M?
Hello, my name is Jiří Beran, I have been involved in fencing since I was a child. Together with my father, who alongside another fencer, Honza Tůma, was at the birth of 5M, we are trying to push fencing boundaries and customer services. I try to pass on all my experience to our customers and young fencers all over the country. I’ve loved fencing my entire life, which is reflected in the talks and exhibitions I do for children and schools. My dad and I started a foundation to support young fencers, through which we also try to promote sport fencing as much as possible. Take a look at who takes care of you at 5M :-) |
A summary of my fencing career
I have been involved in sport fencing since 1991, when the SC Praha sport fencing section was first established, and with whom I still fence to this day. Several times I became the national champion in both the Junior and Senior fencing categories. In 1998, I participated for the first time in the Cadet and Junior World Championships in Valencia (Venezuela). Since then I have represented the Czech Republic in successive junior and subsequently senior national teams.
In the Junior category, I value the silver medal from the 2001 European Junior Championships and the results in late 2000 and early 2001, when I won two world cups and led the junior world rankings.
In the Senior category, I participated in the 2001 European Championships in Madeira for the first time for the Czech Republic. My greatest achievements to date are 1st place at the World Cup 2007 in Buenos Aires and 3rd places at the World Cup 2008 in Lisbon, World Cup 2006 in Sydney and World Cup 2006 in Bogota. In 2006/2007/2008 I was in the top 20 of the World Cup.
Recently , I most appreciate the 3rd place in the World Cup 2014 in Heidenheim, Germany, and not least the victory at the European Qualification for the 2016 Olympics, which earned me direct qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, I was eliminated from the Olympic Games in the first round, when, in overtime, I had an invalid hit that the referee attributed to me, cancelled. As a result, I received international fair-play awards from both the International Fencing Federation and the Czech Olympic Committee. In 2017, we achieved historic success with the épée team by winning the World Cup in Vancouver, Canada for the first time in the history of Czech fencing, and then bringing home a very valuable bronze medal from the European Championships in Tbilisi , Georgia. In 2019, I won an individual bronze medal at the European Championships in Dusseldorf, which I probably value the most. |

A little about me outside of sport fencing:
I studied civil engineering and construction at the University of CTU in Prague. It is a field that I still enjoy, in particular architecture, which gives me another horizon beyond fencing. I also play the drums, which for me is both a physical, coordinating and relaxing addition to sports fencing. If, during my favourite time of year, winter, the circumstances allow, I like to go to the mountains to snowboard or ski. In summer, I enjoy mountain hiking too.
So now you know me a little more about me :-)
